Memento Mori, a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember death,’ became not only a catchphrase but also a philosophy of life for Christians. Initially, death was perceived as a natural part of the life cycle that would inevitably happen to everyone, and ultimately all people were equal in the face of death. However, in later times, especially after the plague epidemic, reminders of mortality took on a more disturbing character: death began to be imagined as a powerful and inexorable force. The emphasis gradually shifted from the idea of justice and equality to inevitability and cruelty.
